Yerba mate, a South American herb related to the Holly whose leaves are drunk much like tea, has a taste that is different from tea, even green tea. It's strong, earthy, bitter, and has a eucalyptus smell.
A pleasant tasting, slightly bitter, stimulating herb, 'Mate' has mild analgesic effects to relieve mental and nervous fatigue; its diuretic and caffeine properties make it popular for slimming.
The leaves and twigs of the Yerba mate plant are dried, typically over a fire, and steeped in hot water to make a herbal tea. Yerba mate may be served cold or hot.
